Electrical Controls Design Engineer

The Electrical Controls Design Engineer works closely with ECS project teams to ensure quality and timely delivery of comprehensive design drawings and associated documentation used in control panel fabrication, network architecture, installation, and other aspects of projects involving the physical elements of a control or information system. Key responsibilities include design coordination, and management of quality, standards, and configuration:

Design Coordination

  • Lead the drawing development on specified projects including independently performing design work along with directing drafting labor to generate control system documentation such as wiring diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, network connectivity drawings, and Bills of Material
  • Produce system deployment documents such as installation diagrams, demolition drawings, conduit schedules, and field wiring checkout sheets
  • Incorporate design specifications and other information provided by the project team into designs
  • Coordinate resources with internal management and subcontracted drafting labor to comply with schedule requirements
  • Review final material lists and submit to procurement
  • Manage, distribute, and archive as-built drawings and associated documentation
  • Coordinate drawings or other files as needed for subcontracted assembly of brackets and other custom-fabricated mechanical components
  • Provide design/drafting labor estimates to sales team and project leads
  • Contribute to Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) work such as site investigation to confirm or document previously installed systems

Quality Management

  • Check drawings and documentation for compliance with best practices, industry standards and specified design requirements
  • Provide drafting feedback and coaching
  • Conduct Design Reviews (proof of concept, engineering acceptance, release for construction)
  • Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) associated with the controls design processes
  • Facilitate stage gate reviews to confirm design SOPs are followed
  • Participate in audits to ensure projects conform with defined methodologies

Standards Management

  • Populate, improve and store drafting symbol and block libraries
  • Manage design templates and re-use resources
  • Maintain internal standard component catalog and best practices associated with design
  • Participate in project closeout meetings and other continuous improvement activities
  • Provide standards training and associated communication to internal design resources

Configuration Management

  • Maintain document revisions and ensure version control for all design documentation
  • Manage storage/retrieval of “hot copy” design files as well as historical recordkeeping
  • Initiate and track design documentation transmittals

  • Proficiency in sizing components such as circuit protection, transformers, enclosures, enclosure cooling
  • Ability to select auxiliary components such as cables, contact blocks, terminations, connectors, adapters

The ideal candidate will have five years minimum experience designing and implementing industrial control systems in addition to an Engineering/Technology/Science Degree in Electrical, Electronics, or associated training. The success of the Design Lead will require expertise with editing drawings and completing designs using AutoCad, broad knowledge of process instrumentation, sensors, motor controls, relay theory, industrial networks, and other technology found in manufacturing systems, and a thorough understanding of industry standards.
